Five Common Reasons For A Blocked Drain

Posted by on December 22, 2013

The five most common causes of blockages are:

Strange objects or debris

Choked or blocked drainage can occur when foreign objects or materials such as hair or soaps, fats or food build up and become caught between the drainpipe and the pipes that flow underneath the home. At first the material may not fully block the drain, but over time materials will continue to collect which will prevent water from flowing freely and could eventually cause a blockage. Toilets regularly block up due to too much toilet paper, sanitary items and even nappies being flushed down the pipes. Young children are often the culprits for blocked toilets and drains. They have been known to flush a full roll of toilet paper, a kid’s toy and even the toilet brush. A blocked toilet is very unpleasant and requires immediate action.

Big rains or storms

Outside drains may become blocked after storms or heavy rain downpours collecting leaves, dirt and other matter that can build up and block drains. Blocked drains during heavy storms are very common as they are generally not designed to manage huge volumes of water. Blocked outside drains can cause flooding and damage to homes and businesses.

Damaged pipes

Another cause of blocked drains can be a damaged pipe. If a pipe is broken the water cannot flow freely and it may collapse, causing the drain to have a blockage. The most usual causes of broken pipes are poor installation, age and tree roots. Tree roots cause huge damage underground and these types of blockages may require detailed investigation of underground pipes to identify where the problem is occurring. Underground pipe repairs can be disruptive and expensive depending on how difficult it is to access the problem area.

Incorrect pipe installation

With the dramatic rise in popularity of do-it-yourself (DIY) repairs and home renovations, there has been a large increase in poorly installed plumbing and drainage pipes. Pipes may become misaligned or completely collapse if not properly installed. Choosing the right pipes is an integral part of any plumbing job and so it is vital that you have a full understanding of the pipe work required to do the job. Incorrect installation is not only dangerous but could also damage other parts of your or your neighbours’ property, causing great expense to you and them.

Water flow problems

Water does not flow uphill and drainage is all about gravity. Incorrect pipe installation with inadequate falls could contribute to the build up of particles and debris and could eventually result in a blocked drain. It is important that pipes are installed correctly to ensure adequate water flows. Drains become blocked for a wide variety of reasons, so it is important to understand what the underlying cause of blocked drainage is. Blockages can build up over a period of time and you may get some early warning signs that there are some obstructions to the water flow. These include gurgling sounds after you flush a toilet, the water level in your sink or bath draining very slowly, and bad smells from sinks or drains.

Some blockages can be easily cleared using a plunger; however treating the symptom may not address the underlying causes of the drain blockage. If you have ongoing drainage problems or need to repair or lay drains, the best practice is to call a professional plumber. Using a professional plumbing service will ensure the job is done properly and save you money in the future.

Preventing Blocked Drains

Posted by on December 20, 2013

Tree roots are usually worse for drainpipes than a typical blockage. An issue occurs in that even when roots are cleared that penetrated the drain pipes, the pipes still remain damaged The water that leaks out of the drain will attract more tree roots which may then enter the drain, and cause it to block up again.

A pipe that penetrates tree roots also often creates a ‘lip’ that serves to catch material flushed down the drain. This makes it easier for the drain to become blocked. The only permanent and recommended solution for drains that continually become blocked by roots is a drain camera inspection. A drain camera identifies the problem section of pipe. After the problem area is identified, you will need to excavate and replace the damaged pipe.

There are a few steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of a blocked drains caused by tree roots. For all new and replacement drain installations, we recommend PVC pipes as the best below ground pipe material to stop tree roots. When properly installed, there is a much-reduced chance of root penetration. PVC pipes are also less likely to collapse with ground subsidence, and usually come with a manufacturer’s guarantee for 50 years.

When it comes to tree roots, it can be difficult to prevent problems from the roots of tress that have already been there. Having said this, after clearing a blocked drain your plumber can usually identify how far down the line the blockage occurred, where tree roots caused the blockage and which tree or trees are likely to be the cause.

We often recommend that new trees should not be planted in the vicinity of your drain lines. If you are not sure exactly where your drains run, ask your plumber. Before planting new trees it is also worth doing some research into which tree species will best for your garden and your drainpipes. Before you know it, a small plant can very quickly becomes a big tree with an extensive root system that may cause blocked drains. Later removal can be very costly, and in a lot of cases may be restricted by your local council.

Many local council websites list known problem tree species that tend to penetrate drains. It is worth having a look at this list! You might spend a little time now investigating what trees not to buy, but this will save you a lot of time and money in the future!

Hydro Jetting Made Simple

Posted by on December 16, 2013

Traditionally, a plumber would use a cable machine to snake your drain. This method has proved to be not very efficient as the clogs return within a short few months. One of the reasons that this method does not work, is there is no way to get to the root cause of the drain blockage. Over time the build up process continues and you end up with the same problem.

Hydro Jetting uses a special high-powered water jet stream to flush out your drains, making them exceptionally clean.  The hydro jetters used by Melbourne 24 Hour Plumbing local plumber have the ability to deliver water at incredible cutting force under thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch. Hydro Jetting will remove the debris that has accumulated in the drain over the past months and even years. You are left with a drain system that is functioning as it should be, clear of debris and waste build up.

Further benefits of Hydro Jetting is that it is so powerful, it can even remove tree root debris that has gotten into your sewer pipes. With hydro jetting technology the tree root debris is completely removed and you are back to having a clean sewer drain quickly.

Many restaurants require Hydro Jet drain cleaning. Grease builds up very quickly in restaurants. In some restaurants, a sewer line can become impacted in 3 months with grease causing the bar area to flood and the floor drains in the bathrooms to over flow with sewer water. Hydro Jet drain cleaning is one of the most effective options when it comes to grease blockages.

The hydro Jet drain-cleaning machine is a truck or mounted on a trailer that is powered by an engine. The machine pressurizes water to roughly 4000 psi through a hose with a special nozzle attached that scours the inside of the drain pipe removing the build up of grease and debris that have formed inside the drain pipe. When the cleaning nozzle is inserted into the drain it slowly breaks down the grease so that it can safely drain into the sewer system. Its important to have Melbourne 24 Hour Plumbing hydro jet your restaurant or bar every 3-5 months to keep your establishment operating without any plumbing interruptions.

There are times when hydro jetting does not work. This can occur if there cracks in your sewer and drain pipes. Cracks in the pipes are a sign that the strength of the entire system has been compromised and needs to be repaired promptly before completely collapsing.

A Professional Plumber Can Make A Difference

Posted by on December 13, 2013

Your plumbing repairs are important for the maintenance of your home. However, you may be tempted to choose a plumber based on price. Choosing the cheapest plumber is not always the best way to go even if you have a very tight budget. It’s a very common saying “you get what you pay for” which is very often true when it comes to choosing a reliable and quality plumber.

Be sure that you choose the right plumber who has great references and has the proper qualifications to fix your problem correctly. An average plumber might be able to identify the problem and have a crack at fixing it. However, they probably wont have the necessary tools and equipment to fix the issue such as blocked drains. They will need a drain camera to place down the drain to ensure there is no cracked piped and if there is a cracked pipe, where is it located. Once the blockage is found, professional plumbers will have the necessary tools to remove the blockage. Many low budget plumbers refer their work to a plumbing professional such as Melbourne 24 Hour Plumbing or Mr. Plumber Sydney

Importantly, speed and reliability to get a plumbing job completed is another reason to use a professional plumbing business. A professional should provide you better service as they have the correct tools to perform the task at hand within a shorter time frame. Usually, a professional plumber will give you an indication of long it is going to take them to complete the job thus not giving you any last minute surprises.

Plumbing problems are often without notice. They will happen when you least expect it and often happen on the weekend when fewer plumbing businesses are operating. This makes it extremely difficult to get a plumber out to your house on the weekend, public holiday or 2am in the morning! Be sure that you have the name and number of a professional plumbing business that has an emergency 1300 or 1800 hotline. A professional plumbing company will be reasonable with their call out rates in an after hours emergency. Importantly, if you have a great relationship with your plumber they will probably by sympathetic to your emergency and not charge you an arm and a leg!

Some companies offer a maintenance program to prevent blockage drain, leaking toilets, dripping taps etc from occurring. Maintenance if the best form of prevention to stop problem plumbing issues occurring.

How to unblock a drain with baking soda

Posted by on December 9, 2013

Sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms stand a chance of getting blocked at some stage with the high frequency of use. This often happens at the worst time possible. Usually this occurs when you are entertaining guests! However, there is no need to worry. Help is right under your nose in your own home.

What you will need

  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Plunger
  • Hot water

If possible, the first thing to do is find the reason for the blockage. There is usually a good reason for a blockage and hopefully this isn’t hard for you to find. By locating the blockage, you have done most the work required to unblock it.

However, if you cant find out where the blockage is occurring, then you need to keep reading on.

Usually when there is a blocked drain in your home you are able to unblock the drain yourself by using a plunger. In this case, no plumber will be required thus saving you money! Should a plunger not do the job, then you will need to use other methods and materials in your home to unblock the blockage.

Other than a plunger, vinegar and soda serve as a great tool and is extremely effective to unblock drains. Most people store vinegar and baking soda in their kitchen cupboards.  Follow the steps below to try unblocking the drain:

  1. Boil water on the stove
  2. Pour approximately 1 cup of baking soda down the drain
  3. Pour approximately 1 cup of vinegar down the drain
  4. Allow the baking soda and vinegar to settle for 10-15 minutes. This should hopefully dissolve whatever is causing the blockage.
  5. Pour the pot of boiling water down the drain to remove any debris that may still exist.

It’s important that you start practicing preventive measures to stop your drain for blocking again. Many people perform the baking soda and vinegar routine once a month as a precautionary measure. Be sure that after washing your hair, you remove any hair that is lodged into the drain to prevent blockages from occurring. At all times, use a strainer in the sink to prevent food and other debris from clogging up your drain.

If none of the above techniques work, you may have a more serious problem in your drain. You will need to contact a Melbourne plumber to help you rectify the issue.

If none of the above techniques work, you may have a more serious problem in your drain. You will need to contact a Melbourne plumber to help you rectify the issue. How To Unblock A Drain

Posted by on December 6, 2013

Please keep reading below to:

  1. Identify a drain with a blockage.
  2. Clear out a blocked drain.
  3. Prevent blockages in the future.
  4. Know your responsibility for unblocking public and private drains.

Find out the initial steps you’ll need to take if you face a blocked drain.

  1. Locate the problem
If the water in your bath or toilet is not draining away properly, this is likely to be the result of a blocked drain.
  2. Do not use the drain
It may seem obvious, but don’t put any more water into the drain! This will only make the problem more severe and more difficult to resolve.
  1. Safety is a priority
Before tackling the blocked drain, make sure you stay safe by wearing full protective clothing (this includes gloves, goggles and overalls). Always remember to remove and clean your protective clothing after you’ve finished work.

Before you begin, make sure you have a set of drain rods, which can be hired or purchased at most hardware stores. Once you have placed on your protective clothing, follow the steps below:

  1. Clear the cover
Firstly remove the inspection cover on the drain. If the cover is rusted shut, use a screwdriver to scrape away the rust and then lift the cover off. If your drain cover has a useable handle, tie some string or wire to it, then pull the cover open.
  2. Remove the obstruction
Use a rod with a plunger attachment to remove the blockage – this may take several minutes of elbow grease by twisting and turning. Alternatively, you may want to try using a standard kitchen mop handle although this is unlikely to be as flexible as a purpose-made drain rod.
  3. Flush with water after removal
Once you’ve removed the blockage; flush the drain thoroughly with water to remove any remaining debris.

Unblocking a drain can be a difficult process, which is best avoided in the first place. Here are a few tips for preventing future drain blockages:

  • Regularly monitor your drains
By checking your drains on a regular basis; you should be able to catch the start of any minor blockages before they get worse.
  • Dispose of waste in the right way
Remember to dispose of rubbish in the right manner. Never flush away items such as face wipes, nappies or cotton wool, as these are likely to block your drains on a regular basis.
  • Keep your drains clear of plants and roots
If possible, try to keep drains clear of roots and plants. If your garden is particularly leafy, try fitting drain guards to help prevent plant matter from falling in and causing blockages.
  • Rinse plates before loading your dishwasher
Always rinse your plates and cutlery before loading your dishwasher. Any excess food will end up in your drains and could build up to cause an unwanted blockage.

Find out your responsibilities as a homeowner or renter and who to contact if you experience a problem with a public drain or sewer.

  • Drain Responsibility
Homeowners and renters are generally responsible for their property’s drains, up to the property boundary. Your home insurance may or may not cover you for some drainage problems.
  • Sewer Responsibility
Public and private sewers are the responsibility of waste and sewerage companies – not private homeowners or renters. You should immediately contact your water company if you encounter a problem.
  • Reporting a blocked drain to the authorities
If a neighbour’s drain is overflowing and the water has leaked onto your home, contact your local council who’ll advise you on what action to take.
